Conventional Products

Many of these conventional cleaning products can be replaced with organic products which do not contain any of the dangerous substances. For example there are many organic cleaning products and laundry detergents that use grapefruit seed extract (GSE) which has been shown to be a powerful multipurpose cleaner that kills a wide variety of bacteria, fungus and other common germs. Conventional laundry detergents contain phosphates, sodium hypochlorate (household bleach) and artificial fragrances (many of which are made with petrolium distillates). These detergents can be replaced with an organic detergent that contains only non-toxic ingredients including GSE.
Air fresheners are another source of many harmful chemicals. A study conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) found that air fresheners contain a volatile organic compound (VOC) called 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4 DCB) which is believed to be carcinogenic. Extended exposure to this chemical can damage lung tissue and is a danger to people with asthma. A safer organic substitute would be “aromatherapy” mists and sprays that contain, for instance, peppermint and/or ginger oil.
